How our Government Fails Us

Due to the reading and discussion in this class, I have paid closer attention to the relationship between the government and the economy in our country. My observations have lead me to one conclusion; politicians from both sides have no interest in listening to what economists advise them to do. Our book has talked about things such as price floors and ceilings and the ideal role of hands off government when deciding economic policy. The book almost always provides a case study or two in each chapter illustrating some way that the government’s economic policies have failed. Despite all of this proof politicians continue to do as the please just to gain reelection instead of solving actual problems.
It frustrates me to no end that people who are supposed to be looking out for people who put them in office continue to ignore even the easiest of examples. This is just a basic introductory economics classes so we’re not even scratching the surface on some of these issues, but for example the book talked extensively about why price floors and ceilings are bad, but they are still allowed to be put into place. This issue clearly shows the government’s ignorance. This is just one simple issue, who knows how many more complex issues the government fails to address due to the fact that the people don’t know enough about those issues to realize how terribly the government has failed to fix them.
The sad part is that both parties are at fault, so there really is no fix. Both parties have their own agendas and certain people they want to please instead of listening to the people who really know. All I can say is hopefully these harsh economic times will urge more people to learn how our economic system really works so they can begin to see, like I have how our government has failed us.

  1. Political decisions are often made not off the suggestions of experts but based on the prevailing political winds.

  2. I agree with the above comments and also, as we talked about in class, there are always two different answers to a question for an economists. The can never give a straight forward answer, its always "on the one hand and on the other hand" so I can see how you can not clearly take an expert economists words completely when they do not all agree with eachother.
